School History

The late William A. and Ruth Loewenberg were Memphians who were actively involved in many philanthropic causes. Mr. Loewenberg served on the Board of Directors for St. Joseph Hospital for many years. He was instrumental in the development of St. Francis Hospital which was built upon land donated by the Loewenberg family. He served St. Francis Hospital for many years as a member of the board of directors.

Throughout his many years of service to St. Francis, he was well known for his support of nursing. When his children Mr. William I. Loewenberg and his wife Betty, Ms. Joanne Markel, and Mrs. Frederika Felt and her husband Joel Felt wanted to honor Mr. and Mrs. Loewenberg, they established a Chair of Excellence in their honor.
